Medicare Part A is hospital insurance and typically covers costs related to inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care and home health services.  

Medicare Part B helps cover medical services like doctors' services, outpatient care, and other medical services that Part A doesn't cover. Part B is optional. Part B helps pay for covered medical services and items when they are medically necessary. Part B also covers some preventive services like exams, lab tests, and screening shots to help prevent, find, or manage a medical problem. 

Medicare Advantage plans, also known as Medicare Part C, are run by private insurance companies regulated by the government, and they must offer coverage comparable to original Medicare parts A and B. 

Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) is extra insurance you can buy from a private health insurance company to help pay your share of out-of-pocket costs in Original Medicare.   They do not include Prescription Drug Coverage.  

 Medicare Part D is an optional prescription drug benefit available to every U.S. resident enrolled in Medicare. These plans allow for additional coverage alongside Original Medicare (Medicare Part A and Part B), Original Medicare paired with a Medicare Supplement Plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan that doesn’t include drug coverage.
